TUE JUNE 12
SOMI

Red Soil In My Eyes (Harmonia Mundi/World Village), the new album by the extraordinary singer/songwriter known as Somi, is a soulful celebration of her Rwandan and Ugandan heritage. Born in Illinois of East African parents, Somi moved to New York and was cast as the featured vocalist in the African Globe Theater production of Drums Under the African Sky; later she worked with Amel Larrieux, Tsidii Le Loka, Roy Hargrove, and Lionel Loueke. Somi's own music is an organic fusion of jazz, classic soul, African folk, and urban "rare groove." Author and critic Greg Tate writes: "Grace, nobility, empathy, seduction, swing, global vision, cinematic sweep-these are just a few of the terms that come to mind when attempting to describe the feelings elicited by Somi...The bridge between jazz and Africa just took on a new elevation."
