Miners Alley Presents the Regional Premiere of
Shining City
By Conor McPherson
Directed by Richard H. Pegg

Set in Dublin “Shining City” takes place in the disheveled office of Ian, a former priest turned therapist. Ian is visited by John, a middle-aged man who has recently lost his wife in a tragic accident. John is having trouble sleeping and is desperate for help, but Ian has his own troubles, including a new baby and a crumbling relationship. John soon reveals the source of his insomnia: he's been visited by the ghost of his dead wife and is now terrified to return home. In this contemporary ghost story, Conor McPherson explores what it means to lose faith-in God, in relationships and in one's self.

“Shining City” plays at Miners Alley, 1224 Washington Avenue in downtown Golden from January 9 – February 15, 2009. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. *Final Sunday performance on February 15 is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available by calling 303-935-3044 or online at minersalley.com.

“Shining City” will be a Miners Alley debut for both Josh Hartwell (Ian) and Kevin Lowry (Lawrence); Ken Street (John) previously appeared in “My Old Lady” and Laura Norman (Neasa) in “Matt and Ben”.

This is Director Richard Pegg’s third ‘outing’ with Conor MacPherson having previously directed and designed the Colorado premiere of “The Weir” in 2002 at South Suburban in Littleton, and designed the Massachusetts premiere the year before on Cape Cod. Also exciting is the collaborative partnership with Janelle Christie as the Assistant Director.

In 2001 Connor McPherson was only 30 and at the top of the theatrical world. He had written more than 10 plays, had three films to his credit, won numerous awards and was a burgeoning star on this side of the Atlantic with his play “The Weir” enjoying a smash eight-month run on Broadway. “Shining City” ran on Broadway in 2006 and was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Play.
