DIRECTOR OF PREMIERE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES PLAY KEEPS “WHODUNIT” SECRET FROM CAST

Director Erich Toll was so taken by the ‘whodunit’ in The Theater Company of Lafayette’s (TCL) upcoming world premiere of Sherlock Holmes and the Spinsters of Blackmead that he decided to incorporate it into the rehearsal process. “We haven’t given the actors the final pages yet,” he says, “and we won’t until the last few days before the opening. So each actor thinks he or she may be the murderer. It’s making for some interesting acting dynamics.”

Spinsters will be showing October 29 – November 20 at the historic Mary Miller Theater, 300 East Simpson Street in Lafayette. Original music for the production is being composed by Chris Piorkowski, using software which emulates the entire Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra!

Spinsters was written by C.P. (Chris) Stancich, the author of TCL’s 2008 hit premiere, Sherlock Holmes and the Doom of Devilsmoor. “This is my third Sherlock Holmes collaboration with Chris,” says TCL Artistic Director Madge Montgomery. “We met when I directed his comic 10-minute play, “Denouement(s)” in Tacoma, Washington, in 1998. It was about a really bad day for Sherlock, as he fails time and again to solve a mystery. I was delighted when he sent meDevilsmoor. It was much truer to the spirit of the original stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, with a classic-style detective story and lots of action and tongue-in-cheek humor, particularly in the relationship between Holmes and Watson.” “The reception to Devilsmoor was great,” adds Montgomery. “We filled one entire performance with people from a Sherlock Holmes fan club from Denver, and another with local 5th graders who had read some of the Holmes stories in class.”
