SERENITY ABSTRACT VISIONS at UCSF Women's Health Center April 24, 2013

April 18 - July 16, 2013; Artists' reception Wednesday, April 24, 5:30 - 7:30pm

McKinley Art Solutions and UCSF Center For Excellence are pleased to present SERENITY: ABSTRACT VISIONS, featuring artists Kathy Truax, Eileen P. Goldenberg, Nancy McHone, Pat Koenigsberg, and Rochelle Carr.

Each of the artists selected for this exhibit were selected by curator Matt McKinley according to their ability to develop a unique 'voice' expressed through an abstract approach to image making. With the understanding that wellness is a holistic ideal, these artists purposefully create art that is meant to reflect positively in its environment in order to engage and uplift visitors to the Women's Health Center. The exhibit covers 5 floors of the Women's Health Center: 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, which each artist displaying a complete body of work on their respective floor.

Of special note in this exhibit is the work of Nancy McHone, displaying on Floor 3. Her body of work, titled 'Autobiography Of An Artist's Illness' covers the period of time just prior to and during her treatment for colorectal cancer at UCSF. The artist states: "The images that presented themselves to me are not obvious representations of illness like Frida Kahlo's vivid portraits of herself in bandages. But as my creative process unfolded, I began to see clear manifestations of the various stages of my cancer-intimations of its presence, development and excise of the tumor and other parts of my body, the stoma created by my ileostomy, the healing of these openings and, finally, my return to health, in the shapes, textures and colors that formed my work."

"While I am not "back to normal", Nancy shares, "[Two years after the start of treatment] I am clearly on the plateau of my "new normal", cancer-free and very optimistic about my future health."
