Join Orlando Sentinel “Flashback” writer Joy Wallace Dickinson for a time trip back to those days, when Elvis Presley played the Municipal Auditorium on a steamy August night and the wrestler Gorgeous George tossed his golden curls in the ring at the American Legion, when betting on numbers meant not the lottery but the underground game of bolita, and when the races in Daytona still roared on the sand. Take a time trip with Joy about those times and about her book of essays, Remembering Orlando: Tales from Elvis to Disney.

Joy Wallace Dickinson writes “Florida Flashback” in the Sunday Orange section of the Orlando Sentinel. She is also the author of Orlando: City of Dreams and the recently published Historic Photos of Orlando. In 1949, her family arrived from Pennsylvania and bought an outdoor market on North Orlando Avenue with sawdust on the floor. She’s seen the area grow from a cozy Southern citrus center – where ladies wore gloves and hats to lunch downtown -- to the place America wants to go on vacation.
