Second Chances:
Renewing and Enhancing the Next Chapter of Our Lives
Are you beginning a new phase of your life? Renewal is an enduring theme of the human experience. The opening of Noah’s Ark at the Skirball—the center’s new children’s and family destination—provides a reminder that second chances are available not only for the world at large but for each individual as well. Whether it involves a major life-changing event, or simply the realization that it is possible to make the next phase of life different and more fruitful than the last, the human spirit is wonderfully capable of new beginnings. This workshop provides a practical guide to fostering self-renewal and tools for dealing with transition and change in one’s life. Explore four key qualities essential to a full life: clarity of values and goals; conscious awareness; creativity/flexibility; and the capacity for courage. Using written materials, lectures, and practical exercises, students will learn to incorporate aspects of renewal in their everyday lives. The course culminates with a musical and theatrical presentation inside Noah’s Ark, performed by the instructor for the students, on themes of renewal. Students of all faiths are welcome.

Instructor: Barry Bortnick, PhD, directed programs in humanities, behavioral sciences, and personal development at UCLA Extension for over twenty years. Trained as a social psychologist at Harvard University with a research background on how people develop values and interests for their lives, Dr. Bortnick has worked with some of the greatest thinkers of our time, including the Dalai Lama, Viktor Frankl, and Rollo May.
