a new leaf gallery | sculpturesite is pleased to present Nature Abstracted, an exhibition of metal sculpture inspired by nature by Matt Devine, Jon Krawczyk and Rob Lorenson. This is Devine's first major showing in Northern California, and he and Krawczyk both join our stable of sculptors with this show. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 6 from 2-4pm, and the show runs through January 6, 2013.

Matt Devine is a self-taught Southern California sculptor whose works can be found in collections in California, Australia and Asia. He is known for assembling compositions of nature-inspired simple shapes into free-standing or wall-hung sculptures that create a powerful presence in the space they occupy. "The use of systematic repetition, intentional minimalism and controlled multiplicity are themes through which to quell inner struggle", says Devine.

Also from Southern California, and already recognized for his uncanny ability to turn sheet metal into highly complex biomorphic sculptures, Jon Krawczyk graduated from Connecticut College then discovered modern sculpture while studying fine art in Europe. Having apprenticed with major figures in American contemporary sculpture, including gallery artists Hans Van de Bovenkamp and Bill Barrett, Krawczyk has quickly developed his own approach to thoughtful constructions of metal forms that appear un-constructed.

"The elements of my work exist in suspended animation. They are situated as though to freeze a moment in time in which they exist effortlessly in space," says Rob Lorenson. The Massachusetts sculptor, with an MFA in sculpture from Northern Illinois University, juggles hard-edged geometric shapes that seem to land on their own in asymmetric, dynamic shapes. The natural references in Lorenson's work are iconic: sun, moon, ice, tree, grass, bird and insect are reduced to the most minimal expression and monochromatic painting, yet the energy released in each work is very much alive.
