Science, Technology and Innovation in Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is making major long term investments in science, technology and innovation. The aim over 20 years is to secure a leading international position in science and technology and to build up substantial new economic activity based on innovation and technological development.

Dr Abdulaziz Al-Swailem is a senior scientist and policy adviser within King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). KACST is an independent scientific organization administratively reporting to the Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia. KACST is both the Saudi Arabian national science agency and its national laboratories. The science agency function involves science and technology policy making, data collection, services such as the patent office, and funding of research in universities, hospitals and other research centres in Saudi Arabia. KACST also has responsibility for international cooperation in science and technology and for fostering Saudi national innovation and technology transfer activities.

Dr Al-Swailem’s lecture will explain the Saudi Arabian strategy for science, technology and innovation and illustrate the rapid pace of progress in the Kingdom.

Dr Al-Swailem is Director of the Natural Resources and Environment Research Institute at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology and is one of the architects of the Saudi strategy to strengthen their science, technology and innovation.
