Saturn Never Sleeps - a new monthly at the Knitting Factory
w/ Tokimonsta, Ben Neill, King Britt, Rucyl, Damon Bennett, vade
:: Built By MeanRed

Finding inspiration in Sun Ra and pulling artists from emerging fringe scenes like Brainfeeder in LA and the experimental Hip Hop scene in NYC and Philly, Saturn Never Sleeps endeavors to renew and regenerate the experience of electronic music and the space that you experience it in. This new music series featuring the best futuretronic sound technicians (DJs, producers, musicians, vocalists) as they collaborate onstage, live and unscripted.

Saturn Never Sleeps is a night of sonic innovation, curated by producer/dj King Britt and multimedia artist, Rucyl. Started in Philadelphia in July 2009 as part of an exhibit and dedication to the music of Sun RA, Saturn Never Sleeps is now a monthly boundary pushing 'creative process' in Philadelphia. MeanRed is now proud to present this series here in NYC at The Knitting Factory.

Rucyl explains, "The term Saturn Never Sleeps came from Sun Ra's love for interstellar universal concepts, and his special connection to the planet Saturn. The monthly event will feature ground-breaking artists, both below and above the radar, as we invite them to perform in an improvised setting which may be different from their usual performance setups as djs, visualists, singers or musicians. Future shows will feature Zap Mama, Anti-Pop Consortium, Imani IZuri, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Bora Yoon, Ursula Rucker, Nosaj Thing and more. The event will feature our musical tastes ranging from soul, hip hop, jazz and modern electronic - a mash up to introduce audiences to the beauty of the process of creating live compositions with no rehearsals. We want to curate artists as living, breathing installations to be enjoyed and understood. Each month the ensemble will change, with King on live electronics and edits, and myself on vocal sampling and processing.

The site saturnneversleeps.com is morphing into a sub-label of fivesixmedia.com so we can release music that is experimental in nature, to create a new outlet for our more non-mainstream sounds, including podcasts and EPs from our extra creative acquaintances, just for the love of the sound electric."

On January 15th, 2009, Saturn Never Sleeps returns to Brooklyn with legendary LA artist TOKiMONSTA. You may have heard her awesome productions on Mary Anne Hobbes' BBC 1 radio program. This female beat de-constructer and cosmic voyager was recently signed to Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and has been destroying parties around LA. We are unbelievably excited to bring her to NYC -- expect an epic jam session, with Ben Neill bringing mutant trumpet sounds, Rucyl bringing the vocaltronics, Damon Bennet on keyboards, King Britt locking in the electronic samples, and vade providing the visuals. In the spirit of Sun Ra, the sonic tapestry created that night will be entirely improvised.

After every performance, we will continue with an amazing DJ set til close.
