The Symphony’s 2011-2012 grande finale concert showcases a new composition, Sidereus, by Grammy® award-winning Argentinean composer, Osvaldo Golijov--a mixture of melancholy and optimism. Sidereus was commissioned by a consortium of 35 orchestras, and is inspired by Galileo’s celestial observations and discoveries. Mozart's Concerto for Horn No. 2 follows, a chase between the orchestra and the soloist. In closing, delight in Dvořák's warm, spontaneous, symphonic masterpiece full of poetic moments and exuberant folk music. The Symphony No. 8, in its warm emotionalism and pastoral contentment, mirrors its creator. It was composed during Dvořák’s annual summer retreat to the country at Vysoká, and his happy contentment with his surroundings shines through the music.
