The 'Madogs of Diego' relates a moment in the history of the Chagossians, living on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. These people were driven out of the island in 1965. Diego was detached from the Mauritian territory in exchange for its idependence. To drive the Chagossians out of Diego, the British burnt all their dogs. They then rented the island to the Americans who built a military base to defend the "free world" from the dangers of communism and now terrorism.
