Sam Borenstein:
The Colors of Montreal
Through May 8
Yeshiva University Museum
15 west 16th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues)
212-294-8330, ext. 8816
Bold colors, dynamic brushwork, and ecstatic energy characterize the paintings of Sam Borenstein. Born in Eastern Europe, Borenstein immigrated to Montreal in 1921. His intensely hued and emotionally charged views of Montreal and the Laurentian landscape earned Borenstein the title of Canada’s only “authentic Expressionist” of the mid-20th century. This exhibition, the first monographic show devoted to the artist outside of Canada, presents over 30 of his works from the 1930 to 1960s.
