The right route for public transport
East Hampshire District Council has ambitious plans to improve public transport and is consulting people about how to get buses moving more effectively for local residents.
This will start with an informal drop-in event at East Meon Village Hall at 10.30am on Saturday 25 April. The event will be fun with children's activities provided by RAPP, East Hampshire's award winning rural play service.
Residents who travel by public transport will have their fare refunded on production of their tickets at the event. And, in return for their views, will receive a free entry into a prize draw offering four £25 prizes.
People can attend the event for a few minutes or a few hours. They can meet councillors and officers and express their views about what most needs to be improved to get public tranport on the right track.

Councillor Ken Carter, who is leading EHDC's drive to improve public transport hopes that people will take the opportunity for a free bus trip to East Meon to help the Council identify what most needs to be improved.
Councillor Carter said: "Whether it's for work, shopping, leisure or to visit friends and family; poor public transport is a major problem for people without access to a car and particularly those living in outlying rural areas. The lack of good public transport also has a negative effect on the environment with more people forced to use their cars whether they want to or not.

"The event at East Meon is for anyone who needs or wishes to help improve public transport for the benefit of local people and the environment. We will also be consulting young people in schools and interviewing people on the streets to make sure we get the best solutions."
Deputy Leader of East Hampshire District Council, and East Meon Ward Councillor, David Parkinson is very keen for people to attend.
"Inadequate public transport affects everyone, young people who are unable to get in and out of town, elderly people who have difficulty visiting friends or relatives in hospital and commuters who have to drive to their nearest station and pay for all day parking. This is an event for everyone as everyone has a stake in public transport."
The results of the consultation will be passed to EHDC's transport consultants. They are carrying out a feasability study for improvements across East Hampshire. When this is completed the options will be reported to the Council in July. The tenders will then be issued with the aim of getting new services on the road by Spring 2010.

Councillor Carter added: "Views gathered at the event will be passed on to our consultants and so could help us to make a real difference to public transport across the district".
