Not Quite Opera Productions launches Round One Cabaret, an evening of new songs by Bay Area composers of musical theater at the Alcove Theater. This 105 minute musical revue, directed by Anne Nygren Doherty, features works by Peter Alexander, Dennis Campagna, Peter Tucker and Scott de Turk, as performed by Peter Alexander, Katherine Goldman, Cliff McCormick, and Melissa O'Keefe.

Soaring melodies, witty lyrics and penetrating insight are accompanied by top- notch vocal performances in this uplifting night of 19 original songs from 7 new musicals. Not Quite Opera, whose mission is to develop new musical theater, launched a search for Bay Area talent. The four composers were chosen from dozens of submissions. Nygren Doherty, the author and composer of the long running hit, Absolutely San Francisco, compiled their work into an entertaining evening that is part concert, part musical theater.

Round One Cabaret is Not Quite Opera's first attempt, since acquiring The Alcove Theater in December 2010, to draw attention to the wealth of quality musical theater originated in the Bay Area. To be accepted, each song had to be wholly original - that is, not a parody - and belong to the score of an original musical show - whether completed and previously work-shopped or in process. The winners run the gamut from the un-produced to published.

Director Anne Nygren Doherty is the composer/author of the long running hit Absolutely San Francisco and was once a student of the late Broadway composer Bob Merrill. Composer Peter Alexander works locally as a singer, actor and dancer and has written two prior musicals. Composer Peter Tucker is hot from his success with "As Always," which appeared at San Francisco's Eureka Theater last spring. Composer Scott de Turk is the author of numerous published musicals and most recently teamed with Scott Tracy on "Born and Raised" at Berkeley Playhouse.

Free concessions accompany a full price ticket; proceeds go toward new work.
