Reptiles: the Beautiful and the Deadly has been extended again at Miami Metrozoo

Miami Metrozoo - Open Year Round. 9:30am - 5:30pm. Gates close at 4pm
The largest traveling reptile exhibition in the world, Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly, will remain open through the end of the year at Miami Metrozoo’s indoor museum Dr. Wilde’s World. This exhibition brings visitors eye to eye with members of the major groups of living reptiles from around the world that include turtles, crocodilians, lizards, and snakes in naturalistic habitats. Fundamental questions are answered and the behaviors, survival strategies and unique characteristics of each reptile group are explored in this 5,000 square-foot exhibition that is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Guests get involved by “milking” venom from a model rattlesnake, opening and closing the jaws of a motorized Gaboon viper skull, crawling through a giant tortoise shell and more. The experience is meant to explode common myths about these mysterious animals and leave visitors with a new appreciation for their unique adaptations.

Deadly snakes, colorful lizards, bizarre turtles, alligators and crocodiles are on display. Visitors may see the Alligator snapping turtle lure fish into his mouth with his worm-like tongue or a venomous cobra stand and spread its neck into a hood. They can observe the Gila monster, one of two venomous lizards in the world, the Diamond-back rattlesnake, one of the most dangerous North American snakes and the African Gaboon viper with fangs up to two-inches - the longest of any snake.

“In this exhibit, kids and adults alike will learn a great deal about reptiles and experience the thrill of seeing venomous snakes in a secure environment. We want to educate people about the role these animals play in the ecosystem and dissuade any misconceptions visitors may have about them,” said Cristina Heredia, Miami Metrozoo Exhibits Manager.

In addition, Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly invites visitors to touch harmless snakes, watch a 20-minute multi-image program packed with beautiful photography and informative facts, and spot 20 different live reptiles from soft-shelled turtles and chameleons to leaf-tail geckos and green tree pythons. With 18 different interactive exhibit components guests learn to tell a male from female tortoise, feel the texture of different reptile skins, learn to speak ‘croc’ in less than five-minutes with Croc Talk and experiment with a myriad of other exciting hands-on activities.

Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly was created by the exhibits department of Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, a zoological institution accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association like Miami Metrozoo. Design and construction of the exhibition took more than two years. Prior to its arrival at Miami Metrozoo, the exhibit was at the Chicago Academy of Sciences/Notebaert Nature Museum.
