“Red Eye” Opening & Afterparty at ArtServe (Art on exibit till 7/30) July 23, 2010

This past year, South Florida’s museums exhibited ancient Italian tapestries, even more ancient Chinese textiles, Norman Rockwell — OK, what we’re getting at is that none of this art came with a party, and we noticed. These exhibits failed to showcase lowbrow and radical art, local indie-rock bands, and avant-garde fashions. Yes, yes, they weren’t supposed to. Who wants to hang with a tapestry drunk anyway? So what happens this time of year (eh, maybe every time of the year) is that New Times itches for a kick-ass multimedia art party, a night dedicated to being immersed in South Florida’s street culture, South Florida’s talent.
Every summer, now in its fifth year, ArtServe has provided us with the wildly successful “Red Eye” event — which happens to be sponsored by the other alt-weekly in town, City Link magazine, no less — and we dig it (now that’s community, right?). With dance performances by the Pablo Malco Foundation and improv sets (hosted by Adam Cieslelski and Pinnacle Actors Group), there will be visual arts, paintings to installations from Skot Olsen (New World Order, pictured here), Keith Clark, Christopher Hooper, Roland Rocco, Juan Carlos Soto, and Ruben Uberia, among others. Heps Fury will showcase his graffiti skills during a live performance. Local bands Dooms de Pop, Alexander, the Green Mantles, and the Waves will provide the soundtrack to the night. Sponsors such as Maracas and Sport Zone 84 will be there to provide food treats. And liquor, wine, and beer will also be present.
