Wednesday October 6, 2010 Red Barn Radio goes LIVE! Join us as we team up with WEKU for a live broadcast featuring the Hog Operation and Mike Mitchell.
Hog Operation:
The Hog Operation is an ensemble that is steeped in Kentucky's rich music tradition. This group gives high-energy performances created by the cross-pollination of many American roots music styles including Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Country and Rock. Hog Operation plays a style of supercharged Bluegrass music using traditional instrumentation - guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle and mandolin - that accompany silky smooth three-part harmony vocals. The players are Steve Cooley, Screamin' John Hawkins, Larry Raley and Chubby Spud (a.k.a. Mike Schroeder). This Louisville-based band has released two CDs, New Litter featuring all original music and Nice Ham Bites, covering a variety of Bluegrass and Country standards. This ensemble draws musical inspiration and repertoire from the lonesome sounds of the early Celtic settlers, as well as the field hollers and blues of the first African Americans that created the true beginnings of the Bluegrass Style.
Mike Mitchell:
The son of a classical pianist and a long line of church musicians and singers, Mike’s world was filled with music from the beginning. In the 1990’s he discovered the lonesome strains of Bluegrass and Old Time music, although it would be another decade before he embraced the style as his own. He recorded and released “High and Lively” on the Flat Five label in 2001, and spent the largest part of 2001 and 2002 touring nationally with the Mike Mitchell Band, and as guest fiddler with The Recipe, and founded the Floyd Music School 2005. In partnership with the Floyd Country Store and Virginia’s Crooked Road organization, the school has continued to grow and flourish. In that same year, Mike co-founded Roanoke based newgrass band, Blue Moonshine. In 2008 he released the critically acclaimed CD, “13 Hours” on the Mountain Feverrecord label.
