Rebecca Solnit to Speak at Portland State

What: Portland States's Literary Arts Council, Speaker's Board and English department present award-winning writer Rebecca Solnit, known as one of the nation's most provocative activist writers. Solnit will offer a talk on her writing life and the potentially controversial subjects she takes on.
"Always insightful, [Solnit's] essays offer many shrewd observations about the social, political and cultural landscape of contemporary America," wrote a recent reviewer in Booklist, while a Los Angeles Times reviewer noted that, "Solnit's intelligent meditations may awaken us from our self- congratulatory coma. [Her] mind is fertile, wide-ranging and capable of integrating the bewildering deluge of fact, political delusion, flights of genius, inconceivable danger and cunning deceit that [have] characterized the nuclear age."
When: Tuesday, April 15. The talk begins at 7 p.m.
Where: Smith Memorial Union, room 236 (1825 SW Broadway).

Background: Solnit is known for confronting edgy topics on landscape and geography, environment, politics and visual culture. She is the author of 12 books, including Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics, published in 2007. Other titles include A Field Guide to Getting Lost (2005); Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities (2004); and River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West (2003), which won a Guggenheim in its research phase and, after publication, several major awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award. Solnit is a contributing editor at Harper's magazine, a columnist for Orion magazine and a longtime contributor to Tomdispatch.com. She is a recent recipient of a prestigious Lannan Foundation Literary Award.
