The traveling quilt exhibit ?Dresden Plate: New Quilts from an Old Favorite? will be on display in the Octagon galleries June 2 through July 23. This exhibit features 18 Dresden Plate-themed quilts and was developed and organized by the Museum of the American Quilter?s Society in Paducah, Kentucky. The Dresden Plate design features a circle of blades with rounded tips. The pointed tips are similar to the fan motif represented in other quilt designs from the late nineteenth century. Quilters from 14 different states as well as Canada and Germany created the award-winning quilts on display. Exhibit sponsors are the Ames Commission on the Arts, the Iowa Arts Council and Quilting Connection.

Additional events in coordination with this exhibit includes a portable quilt show and lecture entitled ?Quilt Tales? by exhibiting artist, Chris Lynn Kirsch. This lecture will be Tuesday, June 27 at 7 pm in the Octagon Main Gallery and is free and open to the public.

A one-day quilting workshop will also be offered on Wednesday, June 28, from 10 am - 4 pm. Chris Lynn Kirsch will lead the workshop ?Parallelisms: Playing with Color & Design? at Quilting Connection, 238 Main Street in Ames. Registration is $30 and includes lunch. The Octagon Center for the Arts is located at 427 Douglas Avenue in Ames. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am ? 5 pm and Saturday through Sunday 1 ? 5 pm. There is no admission fee to view the exhibits, but donations are appreciated.
