Proximity and Isolation - Douglas Malone Solo Exhibition August 1, 2011

July 1, 2011- In a successful attempt to expose the melancholy nature of the human condition, Douglas Malone's anonymous figures are constructed with careful attention to technical and formal elements, to penetrate the viewer's ego and directly forge a relationship with their subconscious. Sandra Lee Gallery presents an exhibition of his works, on view at the gallery August 1-27, 2011. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Saturday August 6th from 2:30-5:30pm.

With drawing as the fundamental basis for each work, it is the inclusion of a soft earth-toned palette and subtle manipulation of the light-shadow relationship that creates emotional tension within the frame. Crediting Caravaggio, Vermeer, and Rembrandt as his influences, Malone prioritizes harmonious composition over visual truth, without challenging reality. The figures are seen in guarded, introspective postures confronting the predicament irreconcilable isolation that stems from the ultimate primacy of the individual.
Currently a professor of Foundation Studies at the College for Creative Studies in Michigan, Douglas Malone helped many Bay Area artists hone their skills at the Academy of Art University, where he taught drawing and anatomy for many years. A modern master of both human form and emotion, Malone has won numerous accolades for his work, which can be found in collections across the United States and Europe.
