Do you know what types of fish to avoid in order to protect your family from mercury? Many people know that seafood contains mercury, a potent neurotoxin, but don’t know how to keep their families’ levels low while continuing to eat fish, which can be part of a healthy diet. The answer is that the Food and Drug Administration advises women of child bearing age and children not to eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish and to limit consumption of all other fish to 12 oz. (2 average meals) a week.

Oceana is working to make sure that grocery stores hang signs about this advice at their seafood counters to help customers make informed decisions about what fish to buy for their families.

Come to a gathering by Whole Foods, which refuses to hang signs about mercury in seafood, to encourage them to do so. We will be speaking to the media about the issue and handing out a list of stores that care enough about customers’ health to hang signs.
