PARTHA CHATTERJEE, a founding member of Subaltern Studies, is the Director of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences in Calcultta and Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University. His research interests include political theory of democracy and the history of Bengal in the twentieth century.

Professor Chatterjee is the author and editor of numerous books, including The Politics of the Governed: Considerations on Political Society in Most of the World (2004), A Princely Impostor? The Strange and Universal History of the Kumar of Bhawal (2002), and The Nation and Its Fragments: Colonial and Postcolonial Histories (1993), which has been translated into Turkish, Spanish, French, and Japanese. He is also author of numerous papers that have been published in International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Economic and Political Weekly, and Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, among others.

Professor Chatterjees lecture will address the history of modern empires in the last 250 years.
