Join the fun, entertainment and drama of the Portland Area Musical Theater Awards (PAMTAs). The event will take place at the Delores Winningstad Theatre in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts (1111 SW Broadway/503.248.4335) and will honor outstanding achievement in the performance of musical theatre in Portland and the surrounding area. The proceedings will be emceed by Oregonian columnist, actress and vocalist Margie Boulé.

2009 marks just the second year of this increasingly-noted awards program. Members of the judging committee are anonymous, even to each other, to avoid outside influence from performers, designers, theatre companies and others on their choices. In keeping with a true “People’s Choice” methodology, committee members may not be active in the theatre community. The key requirement for service is an unbridled passion for, and substantial knowledge of, musical theater.

The PAMTA celebration will include a number of “surprise” performances from some of the area’s most notable theater talent. Designer glass and metal trophies will be presented in 17 categories, including individual performance, ensemble, direction, costuming, scoring and lighting. Productions that garnered awards in last year’s ceremonies include “Cabaret,” “The Ghosts of Celilo,” “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” “Les Miserables,” “The Secret Garden” and others.
