The Polar Plunge Columbia presented by Mattress World is a cold and quirky event held for the first time ever in Portland in 2009, benefiting Special Olympics Oregon. The Law Enforcement Torch Run in Oregon and its Polar Plunge Columbia sponsors and partners have set a goal of raising $75,000 for Special Olympics Oregon. Plungers must raise a minimum of $50 prior to plunge day in order to enter the plunge. Once the money is raised, the rest is fairly simple: Show up on the bank of the Columbia River, wearing whatever costume you choose for the plunge, and, when your group gets the green light, into the river you go! The third annual Polar Plunge Deschutes will also be held in 2009 in Bend on February 27th. Last year’s Bend event saw over 400 plungers raise $70,000 for individuals with intellectual disabilities across the state.
