Carlos Salomon, Fruitvale resident and Director of the Latin American Studies Program at Cal State East Bay, will discuss his book: "Pio Pico, the Last Mexican Governor of California."

Pico held office before the U.S. Mexican War in 1846-48, and was of mixed heritage: African, Native American, and Spanish. His life resonates profoundly in today's diverse Oakland: a story of cultural exchange and perseverance against all odds.

Salomon's book is the first biography of Pico, a two-time governor of Alta California and one of the wealthiest men in the state. Salomon brings to life Pico's passionate early political career, and his later struggle against encroaching American speculators.

The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer, and books will be available for purchase and signing at the lecture. Tamales and drinks will be sold at the lecture by a local restaurant.
