Religion has perhaps been the most powerful guiding force in the history of art. The Hindu and Buddhist traditions are filled with countless visual forms that penetrate almost every aspect of people's lives, yet how these forms evolve in modern art often veer sharply away from "tradition." As the eyes of the art world turn to South Asia, this exhibition looks at the evolving function of spiritual art in our modern times. Picturing the Divine in the 21st Century contrasts traditional forms of Hindu and Buddhist art with contemporary interpretations to explore a new spirituality in the 21st century.

Silent Auction
CIIS is thrilled to offer select pieces from this exhibit through a silent auction to benefit Spirit in the Arts. From antique bronzes of India and contemporary Nepalese masterworks of Tantric art to colorful images of Hindu "pop" calendar art, this fantastic collection offers the public an opportunity to acquire some of the finest examples of sacred art available today at significantly lower-than-market value.

Curator Siddhartha V. Shah, who holds a master's degree in East-West Psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies, studied the history of art and classics at Johns Hopkins University, focusing on the representation of gods and goddesses in art and mythology. Raised in the Hindu tradition, he brings a fresh interpretation of Eastern traditions that can be understood and integrated in the West. Shah specializes in sacred art under the mentorship of renowned painter and writer, Robert Beer.

Cosponsored by the Asian and Comparative Studies Program at CIIS.
