Philosophers' Café: A question of progress

We often assume that there is a pattern of positive progress in human history that moves towards improvement. In the light of nuclear destruction, pollution, global warming and world wars, can we afford to maintain a blind faith in the notion of progress as it presently exists? Is this a matter of faith or responsibility?
