The insightful, intimate and shimmering dance theater work of choreographer Randee Paufve will be celebrated in a benefit performance and reception at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley. The evening begins with wine, hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. performance featuring new works in progress by Paufve/Dance. The performance also includes live music and spoken word by guest artists Katie Faulkner and Mantra Plonsey. Proceeds will benefit Paufve/Dance.

The May 9 program will feature Spider, performed by Katie Kruger to music by Bjork; untitled solo #4 performed by Jill Randall to Bjork; and other works to be announced.

Randee Paufve's work has been described as shimmering like a heat mirage in its intensity, and the choreographer's uncanny ability to capture a broad range of emotion and issues in movement and convey them in deep communication that goes directly to the heart. Acclaimed for equal measures of movement exploration, the highest performance values and community relevance, Paufve's work is based in the belief that dance is a language which captures, describes and illuminates every aspect of the human condition. Her research and choreography examines artifice, authenticity and objectivity in the human body and the body of community. Paufve's vision and work reflect a feminist sensibility, the desire for integration and the necessity of contemporary community building. For each project, she gathers a diverse core of dancers to explore the complex terrain of human relationships. Much of Paufve's work is constructed and performed in non-theatrical sites, exploring the effects of geography on relationships, sexuality, experiences of alienation and belonging. Paufve/Dance has performed nationally and presented events in bars, barns, churches, studios, theaters, meadows, and several times on a roving 4'x4' platform.

$50-$100 sliding scale.
