Parallax: Performance by Zhana Ivanova
13-15 May 2009, 21.30 hrs
Mediamatic BANK, Amsterdam

A parallax is an apparent displacement of an object, as seen from two different stations, or points of view.

“Parallax” is the combination of two seemingly autonomous performances. Both are taking place simultaneously on the same stage, and are to be viewed from two adjacent audience perspectives.

“Parallax” is constructed in accordance to principles of music composition and film editing techniques. It consists of a series of narrative units, featuring elements from recognisable cinema genres. These units are arranged on two independent timelines, with consideration of rhythmical quality, viewing angles and spatial configuration. The parallel progression of these timelines and their intersections, results in a significant correspondence. The combinations of units cause for emerging storylines to fluctuate and for established atmospheres to turn.

Ultimately everything falls into place, producing one coherent performance – “Parallax”.

Parallax is a DasArts final project.
