Don Brown has joined with Turtle Bay Resort and with Surfer [The Bar] to create the “Hawaii Filmmaker’s Showcase”. This weekly Sunday evening event will showcase the cream of the crop of films made by Hawaii’s best filmmakers along with those who made them happen all on Surfer’s large screen.

Fifty years before Texans started herding cattle, the Mexican vaqueros traveled to Hawaii and began a tradition that many people don’t even realize exists. Honolulu filmmaker Edgy Lee has constructed an entertaining and informative history of the Paniolos (Hawaiian word for “cowboy”) who developed a close knit and skilled group of proud tradesmen that still continues on in Hawaii today.

This movie was the recipient of a CINE Golden Eagle award, received the award at the International Film & Video INTERCOM award for Best Documentary in the History category and the Best Documentary award for Writing and it won the Kalihi Award for Best of Show HVCB award among other awards. Veteran Los Angeles Times film critic Kevin Thomas reviewed the film at its Autry Museum debut and said, “What Lee has done in irresistible fashion is a splendid example of the enduring power of the traditional documentary. The kind that brings alive an unfamiliar world in a straightforward manner that is as entertaining as it is informative. “
