Panel Discussion: Ash Tree – Past Uses and Present Peril January 25, 2009

Join Friends of Ryerson Woods for a panel discussion exploring the ecological, landscaping and cultural implications of the arrival of the emerald ash borer in our region.
Presenting will be:
Nan Buckardt, naturalist with the Lake County Forest Preserves will discuss the ecology and natural history of the beetle, including what people should be looking for and what to do.
John Low, Executive Director of the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, will discuss the significance of ash to the Potowatomi, including the rich cultural history of black ash baskets.
Jim Seckelmann of Glenwood Tree Experts will explore the ramifications of the infestation to arborists and landscapers, as well as the measures being taken to minimize the consequences caused by this alien invader.
