Hiddur Napkin

Following in the Jewish tradition of Hiddur Mitzvah, the beautification of a ritual obligation or a good deed, Maya Escobar creates an elaborate composition atop this Challah cover, as she pieces together aspects of both her Jewish and Guatemalan heritage. Through hand felting, quilting, and embroidery, this piece entitled Hiddur Napkin interweaves Hebrew writing and tradition with specific references to the indigenous visual culture of Guatemala.
