London in the 1780s was one of the musical capitals of Europe. While it may not have been a hotbed of home-grown composition, it was a lively centre of performance. In 1784 something revolutionary occurred - London became the first place which looked back at the history of music, when Handel's visionary, often ecstatic, Messiah was revived in a huge performance at Westminster Cathedral, a performance which ensured its still iconic status.
