OpenStreetMap comes to Borough August 6, 2008

OpenStreetMap (http://openstreetmap.org/) is an editable map of the whole world, which is being built largely from scratch using GPS traces, and released with an open content license. It's like wikipedia for maps.



Come along this Wednesday to Borough and join us in the pub (7:30 - 8:00 pm) to chat with us, and find out more about the project, or come along earlier and join in with the map making!

Creating maps which are truly free is a big challenge. We basically have to head out and survey the streets from scratch, without looking at any existing maps. It might sound crazy, but it's actually quite fun! Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people have already got involved in mapping London, and the centre is looking great (in many places better than other map providers!)

In this series of mapping evenings we are turning our attention to areas outside the centre, to push back the boundaries and conquer new territory, but we need your help. Lots of people (local people, or people with a travelcard who are not afraid to use it!) are contributing a little, and this community spirit will allow OpenStreetMap to succeed in the same way that wikipedia does.
