What do Maori warriors, Popeye, Angela Jolie, and Branigan Cultural Center have in common? Tattoos! INK: Tattoos as Personal Expression opens at Branigan Cultural Center on Friday, November 14, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

Tattoos have become increasingly common in todays visual landscape. This exhibition focuses on the art form, the technology and science behind tattooing, local expressions, and the reasons people choose to mark their bodies with ink. INK: Tattoos as Personal Expression runs from November 14, 2008 through January 24, 2009.

Tattoos are found throughout Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley, around the world, and in virtually every culture. With the help of tattoo artists, historians, and artists - the visitor can investigate the fascinating world of tattoos. Interviews with local tattooists, images, historical artifacts, a photo essay by local photographer Chris Mortenson, and a recreation of a modern tattoo parlor are included in the exhibition.

The decision to get a tattoo is very personal and a lifetime commitment. INK: Tattoos as Personal Expression is an inquiry into tattoo history and the role of tattoos in todays world. Please join us in our exploration of the infinitely diverse ways that people have chosen to express themselves with INK.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main Street, is located at the north end of the downtown mall in Las Cruces. The exhibit and reception is free and open to the public. Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about exhibits, contact the Branigan Cultural Center at (575) 541-2154 or visit the Centers web site at http://museums.las-cruces.org.
