Las Cruces, NM –“Barberia,” a photographic essay on barbershops of the borderlands by Roy Jacobson, will be on display at Branigan Cultural Center. The opening reception is part of the 1st Friday Downtown Ramble on February 5th. Jacobson will attend and the public is invited to meet with him. The exhibit remains on display through February 27, 2010.

Barbershops across the nation are fading into the past as unisex hair salons grow. The classic barbershop was more than a place to get a haircut. It was a place where stories are shared; a vital part of the living history of the community. The exhibit includes photographs of surviving shops from Brownsville, Texas to Tucson, Arizona on both sides of the border, including a shop in Mesilla Park.

“In these photographs, I hope I have faithfully represented the barbers, their shops, their trade, and the camaraderie that exists in these classic barber shops,” stated Jacobson.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main Street, is located at the north end of the downtown mall in Las Cruces. The exhibit and reception is free and open to the public. Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about exhibits, contact the Branigan Cultural Center at (575) 541-2154 or visit the Center’s web site at las-cruces.org/museums.
