Even an uneven offering from director Terry Zwigoff and writer Daniel Clowes, who last (dream) teamed up for the sly and big-hearted Ghost World (2001), stands head and shoulders above most of the long-faced indie fare shooting down the cinematic pike these days. Enter Art School Confidential, in which a self-aggrandizing, scrawny naturalist-painting student is overshadowed by big-shouldered conceptualism and a serial killer who targets artists. More cartoony than truly comic, this film succeeds due to the merits of its art direction rather than its cinematography, its cameos rather than its central actors, and its tongue lodged firmly in cheek.
