Kick Off Show: One Short Day in the Emerald City - October 17, 2010
Sweet Adelines International Competition in Seattle - October 19-23, 2010

Sweet Adelines are coming to town! We're expecting close to 10,000 women here in the Emerald City. Sweet Adelines are women who sing barbershop style a cappella harmony.

Pacific Sound Chorus, a local a cappella group, will be competing as winners of their region. To welcome Sweet Adelines to Seattle, the chorus is sponsoring a kick-off concert: One Short Day in the Emerald City. The show features great choruses from the Pacific Northwest, Australia, and New Zealand. Top notch quartets will also be performing including the International Quartet winners from last year, Zing!

Sweet Adelines International has not hosted their annual competition convention in Seattle for over 35 years so it's a really big deal. Susan Gilmore, Seattle Times staff reporter, wrote in a recent article that Sweet Adelines International will be the biggest convention with the largest economic impact in Seattle in 2010.

PSC is sponsoring this performance to welcome competitors to the Emerald City and introduce the general public to women's world-class a cappella singing. PSC will open the show with a series of songs from the Emerald City. Imagine songs from "The Wizard of Oz", "The Wiz," and "Wicked" done in the barbershop style. The show continues with award winning choruses from Australia, New Zealand. Quartets will also perform including "Zing!", the Sweet Adelines 2010 International Quartet Champions, and local award winners "Mojo" and "Live Wire."

This distinctly American singing style started with men singing barbershop harmony at the turn of the century and was soon adopted by women who enjoyed the challenge of a cappella singing.

This four-part, unaccompanied, close-harmony singing has developed and advanced over the years. It is a delight to hear and see the 2010 version of Sweet Adelines
