Papa Noel is one of the greats of African music, a guitarist of exceptional talent, with a career that stretches back forty years. An acclaimed collaboration with the Cuban masters gave birth to the Bana Congo Cross-Border project, nominated for both the MOBO and the BBC Radio 3 Planet Awards.
Bana Congo was launched at Womad in 2002, followed by a highly successful tour of the UK and Europe. This tour launches Papa Noel's latest CD: 'Café Noir' (Tumi 141), an extraordinary album recorded in Havana, Paris, London and the Congo.
He returns to Trinity this season with his eleven piece band featuring some of Cuba and Africa's greatest musicians in which he brings African and Cuban rumba into the 21st century, reuniting their creative energies and celebrating their common heritage in a set of songs spiced by the Cuban tres of Coto and the saxophone of Cameroonian maestro Manu Dibango.
