Kris Lane is the Frances V. Scholes Professor of Colonial Latin American History at Tulane University and the General Editor of the Colonial Latin American Review. He specializes in the colonial history of the Andes, mining, piracy, and global trade. Among other works, he is the author of "Gone Platinum: Contraband and Chemistry in Eighteenth-Century Colombia" (2011), The Colour of Paradise: The Emerald in the Age of Gunpowder Empires (2010), Quito, 1599: City and Colony in Transition (2002), and Pillaging the Empire: Piracy in the Americas, 1500–1750 (1998).

Professor Lane's talk is offered in conjunction with the Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction [FEEGI] conference which will be held at the University of Minnesota on April 20-21, 2012.
