After being rejected by all the leading medical schools, Miss Blackwell was accepted by Geneva Medical College where she graduated first in her class in 1849, becoming the first woman doc-tor to graduate from medical school and the first woman doctor of medicine in the modern era. In addition to starting medical schools for women, she was a social activist working to make the lives of women and children better. Besides the obvious chal-lenges she faced, she lost an eye and had to let go of her dream of becoming the first woman surgeon. Her story is fast-moving, rivet-ing and full of inspiration.
