Stem cells are “generic” cells that can produce exact copies and develop into specialized cells for organs and tissues, such as heart muscle or brain tissue. Stem cell research has long-term potential for development of treatments that affect disease on a cellular level, and holds promise for such diseases as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and Parkinson’s Disease.

In 2007, Dr. Mitalipov’s team was the first to extract stem cells from cloned monkey embryos. He believes that the technology used with monkeys can be applied to humans. He will speak about this groundbreaking work and his plans for future applications. Dr. Mitalipov is Assistant Professor at the Oregon Stem Cell Center and Associate Scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.
