ODC Pilot 61: 'Nightcap' December 15, 2012

ODC School and ODC Theater present Nightcap, a sampling of new dances and an evening of good cheer. A cornerstone of ODC's programming since 1990, the Pilot Program selects a cohort of six artists to receive mentorship in choreography and self-production over the course of an intensive 11 week session. Recognized as an incubator for the next generation of artists, Pilot introduces audiences to up and coming talent in the Bay Area.

Nightcap showcases the choreography of six promising artists, offering a sampling of different movement styles and trends in contemporary performance. Jenni Bregman, a Bay Area favorite since 1999, premieres Home, a comparison of our childhood assumptions about growing up and our real experiences as adults, in which dancers use butcher paper to draw stick-figure selves and real and imaginary places. David Schleiffers, a Pacific Northwest transplant recently featured in Pilot 60 and House Special, returns with a new dance of expansive, traveling movement and unexpected partnering work, with an all male cast of four dancers. Katharine Hawthorne, another Pilot alumnus, analyzes the overlap of art, science, and technology with Analog, a piece about mechanical representations of the body. Drawing inspiration from geophysics and plate tectonics, Erin Malley, a media artist and contemporary dance maker, presents 1.26 milliseconds incorporating "body mapping" infrared technology. Liz Tenuto, a local ambassador of dance and prolific performer, shares the divine and demonic Gush, a supernatural dance trio that embodies the dark side of devotion. Phoebe Osborne, an artist previously based between San Diego and Barcelona, offers up GOLD as a solo exploration of failure, while she begins to unfold herself in her home city of San Francisco.

As one of the final dance performances of the 2012 season, Nightcap will be a night to savor, as these artists propel themselves forward into a new year and new horizons.
