Oakland East Bay Symphony (OEBS) and Music Director Michael Morgan will celebrate "A Woman's Life" on Friday, January 25, at 8 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The opening concert of 2013 will feature works based on powerful, inspiring women. The program will include the opening overture to Beethoven's opera "Fidelio", Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and the incredible song cycle written by composer Richard Danielpour for soprano Angela Brown, based on the insightful poetry of Maya Angelou. A pre-concert talk by John Kendall Bailey will begin at 7 p.m.

The first half of the January program shines a spotlight on the impact women have, while the second half examines the inner thoughts of a woman. From the overture to "Fidelio," in which the heroine, Leonore, courageously rescues her unjustly imprisoned husband, to Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, in which the composer explores his obsessive feelings for Irish actress Harriet Smithson, the program begins by looking at the strength of women. The second half, brought to life by Danielpour and Brown, explores the thoughts and emotions of a woman as she journeys through life.
