Chinook Group regular meeting – Sept. 5 – Nuclear future for Alberta ?
The Chinook Group’s regular monthly public meeting will take place Wednesday Sept. 5 from 7 to 9 pm at the Calgary Area Outdoor Council building at 1111 Memorial Drive NW.

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd has joined forces with a local group (Energy Alberta Corporation) to sell Albertans on nuclear development. Elena Schacherl, representing a provincial coalition group, Citizens Advocating Use of Sustainable Energy (CAUSE), will fill us in on the scope and status of this proposal for nuclear development in Alberta . What exactly is being proposed and what are the risks? What impact can we expect on our scarce water supply? What will happen to the nuclear waste? Find out about Ontario 's decades of experience with the Candu nuclear reactor and the ensuing environmental and economic problems. Learn why the nuclear option is neither green nor clean and what better options are available.

Elena Schacherl has been involved in the environmental movement for many years in Saskatchewan . In the 90's she was on the steering committee of Pokebusters, a citizens coalition opposed to construction of a Slowpoke 10 nuclear reactor at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon . She has also served as a member of the Saskatchewan NDP Environmental Caucus. From 1995 to 2000 she held the position of Coordinator of the Saskatchewan Dutch Elm Disease program. She holds university degrees in English and Education and has 20 years of nonprofit management experience. She now lives in Calgary and launched CAUSE in February of last year.

The guest speaker for this meeting will be a representative from CAUSE, the citizens’ group that has formed to oppose nuclear power development in northern Alberta .
