The High Noon Saloon, 701A E. Washington Ave. welcomes Nick's Pick's Volume One: A Great Deal of Grateful Dead, a Hundredth Monkey Productions event. This special event, an all night tribute to the legendary band, will be hosted by Madison's own roots-rock outfit Elf Lettuce and an all-star lineup of their closest musical comrades.
After supporting the legendary Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s “funky” drummer from 1965-1970) for one year, Elf Lettuce has moved on to host their own weekly show, and has had the privilege of recently performing with Melvin Seals, long-time keyboardist for the Jerry Garcia Band. "When considering an event to pay tribute to the Grateful Dead, the first band that came to mind was Elf Lettuce," explains promoter Nicholas True. "Their sound bears resemblance to the layers of tone The Dead were experimenting with in the late '60's and early '70's – I knew they would be ideal to headline this concert."
Nick's Picks will truly be an event that is above and beyond the ordinary: an interactive experience for the audience member. Hand drummers are invited to bring one percussion item (to be checked in the balcony area) for a drum circle at set break. Door prizes will be awarded, and a festive tie-dyed atmosphere will adorn Madison's beloved High Noon Saloon.
The show will begin as an all-acoustic tribute to The Grateful Dead, with select musicians like Sweetgrass banjo player Cole Christianson and Smokin' Bandits flat picker Patrick Ferguson, also Joe Burbach and Jimmy Tree of the Grasshoppers, with very special guest Denny Vanesky of Insomniac Gypsy performing sparse renditions of traditional and modern tunes in the Grateful Dead style. The second set of the evening will feature Elf Lettuce and friends performing an all electric collection of some of the Dead's finest selections. It's sure to be an evening of pure celebration and bliss!
