Coming off a two-month break after Black February, his run of 48 New York shows in 28 days to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Conduction, Lawrence ?Butch? Morris returns to Nublu for NextMondays, once again conducting the Nublu Orchestra.

A cornet player by trade, Morris invented Conduction, a system of physical movements that transcend the traditional role of conductor. He leads ensembles through improvisations that often take the form of complete songs, coaxing out themes, controlling dynamics, layering rhythms, and adding and subtracting instruments.

Butch?s relationship with the Nublu Orchestra is a special one. While he often uses Conduction with traditional classical and jazz ensembles, the Nublu musicians are as varied in style as the eclectic nights at the little living room venue on Avenue C. Among the players are Sylvia Gordon and Deantoni Parks of the electro-breakbeat outfit Kudu; Didi Gutman, Aaron Johnston, and Jesse Murphy of dance-tronica Brazilian Girls; Kenny
Wollesen, who has worked with John Zorn, Love Trio, and Tom Waits; the avant-garde trumpet player Graham Haynes; minimal techno DJ, Hardedge; and Ilhan Ersahin, the leader of Wax Poetic, I Led Three Lives, and Love Trio. The result of the varied musical styles of the improvisers is unpredictable, weaving in and out of dub, left-field jazz, funk, and electronics.

Rounding out the evening are Cocoa Cracker Brown and Shuga Milk, Nublu?s Monday night resident DJs, whose record selections reflect the eclecticism of the orchestra, ranging from German glitch to Nigerian psychedelia and Oakland funk.
