Capturing the narcotics-induced, paranoid fantasies of writer William S. Burroughs, Howard Shore's brilliant score features saxophone improvisations by Ornette Coleman and Moroccan jajouka—an ancient trance music that Beat-era writers and artists were known to have explored. "[Coleman is a] very radical jazz musician," Cronenberg observes, "legitimately the musical equivalent of Burroughs, who was also considered quite radical, quite out there, and yet with his own fantastic sense of rhythm and composition." 115 min.

A rarely screened National Film Board of Canada cut-out animation with an extraordinary suite-like score by Coleman, featuring the virtuoso musician on alto sax, violin, and trumpet; David Izenzon on string bass; and Charles Moffet on drums. 14 min.
