The Austin History Center and Austin History Center Association presents a program, “Music of the Great Depression,” at the Sweet Home Baptist Church (1725 W. 11th St, Austin). John Wheat, audio archivist at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, will speak about the Lomax project, funded in part by the WPA, to document American folk and roots music. Following his speech, the Sweet Home Baptist Church choir will sing spirituals from the 1930s and singer/songwriter Guy Forsyth will entertain the crowd with folk songs from the 1930s.
This program is part of a series of programs related to the History Center's exhibit, "Relief, Recovery & Progress: The Great Depression and New Deal in Austin." This exhibit explores 1930s Austin, how the Depression had a lasting impact on our community, and what lessons can be learned as the country grapples with the current economic woes.
