Brooklyn, NY, Women of the Calabash will bring their astounding, dramatic, phenomenally charged, and entertaining ensemble to the Brooklyn Conservatory to entertain and educate kids of all ages in the second Music for Families concert of the 2009/10 season.

Combining traditional instruments, lush vocals, and musical forms with contemporary influences, Women of the Calabash have enchanted audiences for over 20 years, performing music from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Black America. Their use of different varieties of percussion instruments, all made from natural materials such as calabash (a type of dried gourd), bamboo, and woods, explodes the air with harmonious percussive beauty
The group's free-flowing performance is also interwoven with informal dialogue highlighting the history and playing techniques of the various instruments used. It is also interactive, allowing children to become involved in the magic around them.
Their performances have brought audiences to their feet at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall, Town Hall, and The Walker Art Center. They've been heard on national radio and television, and have played to standing room only crowds across four continents. They have shared the stage with great performers such as Phillip Glass, Max Roach and The Temptations.
The Music for Families series offers entertaining and educational afternoon concerts geared toward children and parents; often with a participatory element, traversing genres of classical, jazz, and world music. This year, Music For Families will conclude its 2009/10 season with Tales & Scales, May 23.

Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit community schools of the arts in the nation. The Conservatory serves more than 10,000 people each year, of all ages and backgrounds, through free and subsidized music instruction, educational programs in nearly 40 schools, and free and inexpensive concerts. The Conservatory is located at 58 7th Avenue in Park Slope Brooklyn.
